Pathogens found in dog waste:
Parvo - In dogs, this potentially fatal virus causes vomiting, severe diarrhea, depression, high fever and loss of appetite.
Roundworms
- In humans, this can cause disease of the brain, lungs, kidney, liver,
heart or eyes. It can lead to blindness especially among children.
Hookworm - In humans, this can cause gastrointestinal problems, anemia, vomiting, fever, and even congestive heart failure. In children, it can decrease their rate of growth and mental development.
Tapeworm -
In severe cases among dogs, it can cause partial or total intestinal obstruction, which is a serious medical emergency. In humans, it can cause large cysts to form in the liver, lung, and brain
which can lead to serious illness or death.
Giardia - In children, it can delay physical and mental growth.
Cryptosporidium - In humans, can cause
diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea and
dehydration. It may be fatal to people with depressed immune systems.
Campylobacteriosis - It can cause serious life threatening infections in persons with compromised immune systems. Up to 49% of dogs are carriers of it, and therefore pass it through their stool.
Distemper - Highly infectious, it affects a dog’s respiratory, gastrointestinal, respiratory and central nervous systems, and the conjunctival membranes of the eye. It’s passed from dog to dog through direct contact with fresh urine, blood or saliva.
Corona - Highly contagious, spread through the feces of infected dogs. It causes nausea, lack of appetite, vomiting and diarrhea.
Colibacillosis (E. Coli) - In people, it can cause urinary tract infections, severe anemia or kidney failure, which can lead to death.
